In Bangladesh, this issue is
becoming more important than ever. The healthcare sector is growing rapidly,
and hospitals must manage medicines, surgical items, diagnostic reagents,
medical equipment, oxygen, implants, consumables, and emergency supplies with
greater accuracy and transparency.
According to The Business Standard,
Bangladesh has 654 government hospitals, more than 5,000 private hospitals
and clinics, and 10,675 privately registered diagnostic canters, supported
by more than 500 regular suppliers of essential medical supplies. This scale
shows why transparency in healthcare procurement and supply chain is not
optional anymore—it is essential.
This is where blockchain
technology can play a powerful role.

requisition to purchase order, supplier delivery, quality check, store receipt,
department issue, and final consumption.
Instead of keeping records in
separate systems or paper files, blockchain can help hospitals create a shared
and trusted source of information.
For example, when a hospital purchases surgical gloves, the blockchain record could show:
- Approved vendor
- Purchase order details
- Batch number
- Manufacturing and expiry date
- Delivery date
- Quality inspection status
- Store receipt
- Department-wise usage
- Payment status

database.
This shows that Bangladesh is
already moving toward more structured digital supply chain visibility.
Blockchain can be a future layer on
top of such systems to make records more tamper-resistant and auditable. For
example, procurement plans, tender approvals, supplier selection, delivery
confirmations, and payment milestones could be recorded in a way that improves
trust among hospitals, vendors, government bodies, and auditors.
USAID’s Global Health Supply Chain
Program also reported that technical recommendations helped Bangladesh’s DGHS
reduce procurement lead-time by aligning approval authority with prescribed
procedures. This highlights how process improvement and governance can directly

Starting Point for Bangladesh
Bangladeshi hospitals do not need
to begin with a full blockchain transformation. They can start with pilot
projects.
Good pilot areas may include:
- High-value implants
- Life-saving medicines
- ICU consumables
- Laboratory reagents
- Emergency procurement
- Vendor delivery tracking
- Expiry and batch tracking
A private hospital group could start by tracking selected critical items across procurement, store, pharmacy, and finance. A public hospital project could begin with essential medicines or medical equipment procurement.
The goal should be simple: increase
visibility, reduce manual disputes, and improve trust in supply chain records.

Thoughts
Hospital supply chain management is
directly connected to patient care, financial performance, and institutional
reputation. In Bangladesh, where healthcare demand is rising and hospital
operations are becoming more complex, transparency is a strategic necessity.
Blockchain can help hospitals move
